Gary had some bad luck on the run up to this event - a serious car accident a few months previously, leaving Gary in poor fitness and needing continued chiropractic and physiotherapy to continue to compete. At the time of this event Gary was at his worst fitness of his carreer, and fought multi-world heavyweight champion Mark Russell in the first round of this event. Although Mark was also having an off day, Gary couldn't be decisive, and lost to on a split points decision.
