2003, K1 Andy Hug Memorial, Basel,
Switzerland
Gary was billed as fighting Azem Maksutaj on this show, but Azem
became drafted into the main 8 man event in the last couple of days
before the event. This meant his undercard fight was now against the
Turk, Kucukulan. Gary took the fight to Kucukulan, and landed with many
leg kicks before moving away out of range of Kucukulan's punching. At
the end of round two he couldn't take many more, and the fight was
stopped - Gary won by TKO.
Gary left the ring, and back in the changing
room was just starting to take his wraps off, when Thomas Kastle, the
promoter, arrived. Larry Lindwall had broken his hand, and therefore
Gary had the opportunity to fight in the main tournament semi-final
against Bjorn Bregy. Gary obviously rose to the challenge, and five
minutes later found himself back in the ring against the 6'7" Swiss
fighter. Gary thundered into Bregy time after time, smashing him to the
floor no less than 15 times during the three round match. Yet somehow
the judges scored a points win to Bregy, and the crowd were vocal in
their dissaproval. Bregy won on points.
